In 2015, Microsoft launched the preview version of what we now know as PowerApps. The unique aspect of this application was that it allowed users to create interactive and fully functional apps without any coding skills. It intrigued developers, and the wait began. In 2016, the app launched, and it soon had people talking about the pros and cons.
What are the System Requirements for PowerApps?
It is a free app that is compatible with both PCs and mobile devices. It is only compatible with Windows as the operating system (Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile) so you cannot use it on mobile devices where the operating system is Android or iOS.
It supports 43 languages and enables users to create and share apps with anyone who has downloaded the PowerApps application. One important point to note is that this app is only for enterprises so you would need an official e-mail ID to login and create an app.
What Skills Do You Need to Create Apps Using PowerApps?
In short, the answer is nothing specific. You only need to become familiar with computers and be able to follow the instructions. Although there are no specific programming and coding skills, I want to reiterate the fact that a business e-mail is required.
How Do You Create Apps Using PowerApps?
There are quite a few ways to create apps using PowerApps. The one that I am discussing today uses the PowerApps Studio for Windows the data source is SharePoint, and we are just creating a default app. For the goal of this step by step guide, I have already created a list of information that I would like to build an app for. You can use any existing list and create an app following the steps listed below:
Step 1: Click the New app button from the bottom left side.
Step 2: Select the Power Apps Studio for Windows.
Step 3: Select Phone Layout for SharePoint
Step 4: Note: You need to be signed in with your SharePoint account. These will automatically appear if you have ever signed in.
Step 5: Choose the list that you want to create an app on and click Connect from the bottom right side. PowerApps will automatically create a default app from the details in the existing list.
Step 6: Click the Preview button from the top right side to see how the app works.
How to Customize the Default App?
The above section ended on how you can create a default app. Now, what if you want to personalize the app or make changes. There are many options that you can make use of to customize the app. Besides adding more pages or deleting pages, you can change the layout with or without images; change the content field view; rearrange the order of the content; etc. Once you have customized your app, save it before you proceed to share it.
The PowerApps shows all the customization changes in the preview screen immediately. So, you do not need to run again and again to see how the app changes.
How to Share the App Created Using the PowerApps?
You will only be able to share the apps with your colleagues within the office and not with anyone else. When your app is ready, follow the steps below to share it. Once again, the steps are for Power Apps Studio.
Step 1: Select Share from the menu.
Step 2: Select Apps from the left-hand navigation. All your created apps should now be visible on the screen.
Step 3: From the dropdown for the app, select Share.
Step 4: Specify the recipients’ details, check or uncheck the recipient notification as you wish.
Step 5: Click Save to share the app with the selected recipient or Share with org to share the app with the entire organization.
Note: You can specify the permissions before sharing the app. It includes selecting a user or contributor. The authorization is self-explanatory. In brief, a user can only see the app whereas a contributor can share the app with other users and even make changes.
The steps listed above for creating and sharing the app are for creating a default app using the permutation and combination listed in each case. There are more ways to make your app interactive, add greater customization, make it more secure (access rights), etc. Once you are comfortable with the basics, you can go on to create more complex apps.
